Developed in the 19th century in the county of Yorkshire England, the Yorkshire Terrier is a small breed dog (toy dog) that
was originally bred to catch rats in clothing mills and used for rat baiting. Today, the Yorkie, as they're commonly known, is a popular
companion dog and a favourite among Canadians!
Yorkshire Terriers are oblivious of their small size. They are fun-loving, highly energetic,
clever, brave and loyal! They can be attention seeking and love to use their vocals to tell you what to do and run the rule. So don't
be fooled by their petiteness. The Yorkies are affectionate with their masters but can be suspicious with strangers and lesser known
people. Aggression is not in their blood, but they do display these traits when provoked and new to strange dogs and small animals.
It is wise to expose them extensively to people and unusual sights and sounds. Otherwise their suspicion can become shrillness or
even nastiness.
Potential Yorkie owners should know that these breed have a true terrier heritage and need someone who understands
how to be a good pack leader! You need to be firm with kindness as Yorkies can be extremely dependant and demanding, jealous and over
protective. If they start to take over the house, they develop a small dog syndrome where they can be snappy due to the littlest of
reasons - either slightly surprised, frightened or teased.
Yorkshire Terriers are notoriously stubborn when it comes to house breaking.
You have to be very consistent and set proper boundaries from the start. Consider getting an indoor litter box or fitting a doggy
door leading out to the yard. You have to pay special attention to using repetitive commands and drilling your message in as early
and as consistently as possible, Yorkies tend to bark excessively and has to be kept under control. They have to be taught that possessiveness
of their food and toy is a no-go. The positive side is they make excellent watchdogs!
Despite some difficult traits, Yorkies are very
sweet and loving and can be trusted with children. They are truly loyal, fun and full of adventure. If you're looking for a dog with
zest and a true human companion, the Yorkshire Terriers may be suitable for you.
