Border Collie

Ranked as one of the most intelligent dogs by Stanley Coren (a psychology professor and researcher from University of British Columbia), the Border Collie is a highly energetic breed which is used on farms to herd livestock and these days, also a companion dog.

The Border Collie is a highly agile dog with plenty of stamina and willpower. Training a Border Collie is very pleasurable as it is learns very quickly and is very eager to please. The Border Collie is in fact one of the most trainable breed of dogs. This well-balanced dog has a good temperament and is both loyal and dedicated to his family.

Border Collies require plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation. They have a strong desire to work closely with a human trainer. With their working legacy, they make a very demanding, energetic pet, more suitable in households that can offer them with plenty of play with humans or other dogs. The tail of a Border Collie shows the mindset the dog is in at that moment. A raised, wagging tail indicates that the dog is in an excited mood and is not concentrating on work. With the tail lowered and ducked between the legs, it indicates that the collie is focused and ready for work.

Though perfect as a choice of dog in some households, Border Collies are not for all. Due to their natural herding tendency, they are more likely to control the movement of anything that moves, for example, cars, cats, children or bicycles. This is more intense without proper mental and physical stimulation. This breed is generally not suitable for households with small children.

The Border Collie does not generally shed. About twice a year, it will shed a little heavier. Depending on the length of the coat, it may need a daily brush. On most occasion, a weekly brushing is sufficient.
