The word Schnauzer in German means “moustache”. The term came from the word schnauzer which means “snout”, because of the breed’s distinctive furry muzzle. Schnauzers come in three types of breed: miniature, standard and giant. Friendly and loving, Schnauzers easily integrate themselves into the family and get on perfect with the children. The Schnauzers are agile dogs with plenty of spirit and enthusiasm. With their protective nature, they will alert their owners to any potential danger. The breed is very intelligent, but tends to have a mind of their own too, prompting owners to start their training as young as possible. On the other hand, their eagerness to please and their sense of responsiveness make them very trainable. The Schnauzers are generally very active dogs, full of energy and have to be exercised daily. Mental and physical stimulation is important for this breed, otherwise he can become bored and destructive. These dogs are ideal for active families, and for confident, experienced owners.

MINIATURE SCHNAUZERS have high energy levels, are very intelligent and are often salt and pepper or black. Other colours include silver, white or multi-coloured. They are very well-adapted to outdoor living, but they enjoy spending quality time with their owners. They make excellent pets as they are loyal to their owners and often not hostile with strangers, but are quick to sound the alarm on apparent dangers.

STANDARD SCHNAUZERS are in the group of working dogs. They are used to catch rats and as guard dogs. They have also been used to carry messages in times of war, helped the Red Cross and as police dogs.

GIANT SCHNAUZERS are intelligent and multitalented working dogs. Like the other two versions, giant Schnauzers are very loyal and love to be with their owners. However, giant Schnauzers tend to be dominant and they need owners who understand the canine behaviours very well and are able to show their authority. Giants are tremendous protectors and their size alone is a major hold back to trouble.
