The Golden Retriever was historically developed as a gundog to retrieve shot waterfowl and upland game during hunting. Therefore, they developed soft mouths to retrieve game intact and a natural love for water. Golden retrievers are also used in other roles such as illegal drug detection, search and rescue and guide dogs. All these are made possible because of the Goldie’s versatility and intelligence. Today, it is one of the most popular breed among families.

The Golden Retriever possesses a very friendly and eager-to-please demeanour. They are widely known as a kind and confident dog. They are known to be equally sociable with strangers and to those familiar to them. Their trusting nature actually makes them a very poor guard dog. Aggression and hostility are definitely not in line with a Goldie’s character. And any display of such behaviour is considered a serious fault. Neither are they supposed to be overly timid or nervous. Golden Retrievers are also known for their intelligence and the ease of having to train them. In fact, they are exceptionally trainable, partly because of their athleticism and desire to please their handlers, and generally excel in obedience trials. These dogs are renowned for their patience with children. They are also compatible with other dogs, cats and most livestock. Golden Retrievers are particularly valued for their high level of sociability towards people, calmness, and willingness to learn.

The average life span of a Golden Retriever is about 10 to 12 years.  Because of the popularity of this dog, breeding Golden Retrievers have been very lucrative for backyard breeders. As a result of such slipshod breeding tactics, Golden Retrievers are prone to genetic disorders and other diseases. Hip Dysplasia is very common in this breed of dog. This is an abnormal formation of the hip socket, which in a more serious case, can cause crippling lameness and arthritis of the joints. Cancer is also one of the most common health issues contributing to the death of a Golden Retriever. As high as 62% of American Golden died of cancer,  based on a study done in 1998. Other causes include eye diseases, heart failure, joint diseases and skin diseases.
